Affirmative Action and Diversity Recruiting a la Recruiting Animal #discrimination I like the Recruiting Animal.  A lot of people find him offensive but he brings out real issues and doesnt let you hide behind rhetoric.  You can hear his show on Wednesdays. Heres something he wrote on Facebook earlier this month (Im posting with his permission): Yesterday, on The Recruiting Animal Show my guest was Chris Fields. He wrote a blog posting in which he declared: We all know that diversity helps make everything better. I challenged him on this. How is a Greek programmer better than an Italian programmer? How is a woman programmer better than a man? What about a Dutch accountant? Better than a Russian accountant? He hadnt thought the issue through and all he could say was, The teams Ive worked on have always been better when they were diverse. I dont want to work on a team full of me. But, in fact, he also said that people are naturally attracted to people like themselves. Thats why every minority needs affirmative action. Because most of the hiring managers are going to be from the majority population and they are naturally going to favour people like themselves. Inotherwords, everyone in the world is, by nature, averse to diversity. So, if people like people like themselves, how can teams be better when they are diverse? Chris didnt tell us that either. He wants to come back on the show. And maybe hell have answers then. When Ed Newman was a guest (heres a less-than-three-minute clip), he said that diversity programs are just to prevent the standard bias in hiring. But they dont promote innovation through the hiring of diverse thinkers. There are a lot of things to hate about affirmative action, whether you are a minority or not. It is an ingrained part of HR and hiring so for now, how do you get around any decisions based on discriminatory hiring and focus on talents, skills, deliverables, etc? These people have been through many of the same things you’re dealing with, and they can give you advice about how to deal with many of the common issues you’ll face. They can also share how they’re able to balance all of the different aspects of their lives.   It’s All about Being Realistic Balancing your personal and professional life really simply comes down to being realistic. You have to know what you can do in one area without giving up any responsibilities in other areas. There’s no major trick to itâ€"you just have to be realistic about what you’re capable of doing. In some cases, that may mean realizing that your professional goals require an extra year or two to achieve. Her goal is to transition into a career that motivates and inspires her and now she is one step closer. Shes created a career vision that excites her! Many professionals and executives become stuck when they think of career goals. It can be difficult trying to envision a career that would be meaningful, purposeful and inspiring. I mean, seriously, who has that, right? Well, actually lots of people! Specifically, those who are able to articulate their passions, strengths, successes and the type of organization and management style where they perform their best. Im thrilled that Meghan has successfully identified each of these key areas. She knows the type of career that inspires her includes doing meaningful, socially conscious work, flexing her creative muscles, as well as being in a project management-type of position where management respects her ideas and gives her decision making responsibilities. She also has defined the type of organization, culture and management style that she needs in order to be at her career best. This is a big accomplishment for Meghan, and Im proud of her for completing her first assignment! Her background and work experience includes being an executive pastry chef, marketing specialist and entrepreneur, so getting clear on a career vision took dedicated focus and thought. Establishing a powerful career vision and goals is critical if you want to have a meaningful and purposeful career. One of the biggest mistakes I made in my own career was thinking that if I got a job â€" then that was where I was meant to be. After a few months, Id start feeling unfulfilled, unmotivated or unappreciated. Then, one day I realized that I need to be more proactive in my career. I needed to set the bar higher for what I wanted (and needed) in my career. Once I did that, I achieved greater success than I ever dreamed possible inside a Fortune 100 company. Now that Meghan has a strong sense of direction and purpose for her career, were moving on to Step #2 which is â€" assessing the job market. Meghan needs to understand what kind of jobs are available that align to her personal Career Success Blueprint. Her assignment this week: review on-line job boards, industry magazines, company websites, and business periodicals to get a clear understanding of what the hot jobs are, and what the requirements are for those jobs. Shell need to come back to me with job postings that shes found that excite her! It doesnt have to be the entire job listing, but can just be something in the listing that excites her such as the job tile, a few of the key responsibilities, or even the description of the organization. The purpose of the assignment is to see what types of job openings are available that align to Meghans strengths and spark enthusiasm for Meghan. This will give us the roadmap to create a customized resume to help her land her new career! I cant wait to see what she finds! ??

How to Ace the Job Interview and Figure Out What Youre Doing Wrong No job is perfect, not the one you have and not the one you want, but you still want to put yourself in a better position career-wise, you are just petrified at the thought of being interviewed for a new position. Many people have trouble with the interview process, whether becoming frustrated with the line of questions, or not being able to answer questions the way they want to.   However, there are things you can do to ensure that your next interview experience begins and ends on a positive note. Just because you may interview poorly doesnt mean that you cannot change your actions and improve how you present yourself during an interview. If you are not chosen for the job, it doesnt mean youre not qualified, it may just mean that you need to improve you interviewing skills. If you are weak in certain areas, then try to improve those areas. If you put your mind to it, you can improve those areas and become a better interviewee. There is a job out there for you. All you have to do is keep trying and keep believing in yourself. How do you go about nailing that job interview though? What are some tips to improve your interviewing abilities? 1. Remember that youre trying to determine if the company is right for you as well. They are not the only ones with power here. Research aspects of the company prior to the interview and be prepared to ask questions in order to see if the position and company are a good fit. 2. Greet the interviewer with a warm smile and maintain eye contact. This is where some people run into problems. They come into the interview nervous and without a clear plan of action. After that initial handshake, make sure to keep eye contact (if all else fails look at the person’s forehead).   If you are being interviewed by more than one person,  make sure  you are making eye contact with each interviewer as you are answering questions. You need to remain confident and calm as you navigate your way through the interview. 3. Listen carefully and make mental notes of questions to ask. A lot of the time the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions about the position, company, etc., this is your time to ask the questions youve been thinking of. No questions are out of bounds as long as they are related to the job or the type of work needed. Youre trying to see if the company and position are right for you, so remember that and do not get frustrated. 4. Have brief and positive answers for questions. Interviewers will ask you why you left your last company, why you have gaps in your employment history, why you appear to have too many jobs and why you want to work for this company. Prepare a list of answers to these questions so that you will not be blindsided when they pop up, because they will pop up. 5. Be positive and upbeat  throughout the interview. Keep your energy up. Interviewers can tell when your interest starts to wane, so keep up the positive energy flowing. Dont fake it, but make it genuine. Tell them why youre interested in the company, why you think you’re a good fit for their needs and how you believe that you can achieve great things there.
